Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-6 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Individual Occupational Requirements: Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings OR Technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. In addition to the Individual Occupational Requirements, you must meet the Specialized Experience. Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-5 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Knowledge of clinical chemistry, hematology, clinical laboratory science methodologies, and equipment function. This position entails a high degree of specialization in laboratory science, phlebotomy, and shipping. Knowledge of the handling of hazardous materials for state and intra state transportation of biohazard materials. Knowledge of health and safety guidelines as specified by the College of American Pathologists; Occupational Health and Safety Administration and HAZMAT. Knowledge of and skill in training new employees in proper phlebotomy procedures. Physical Requirements: The work of the position requires extensive and recurring physical exertion such as standing for long periods of time, bending, lifting (less than 40 pounds), walking, stooping, and stretching. The work is performed in an adequately heated, lighted, and ventilated clinical laboratory at the Laboratory and/or at another Community Based Outpatient Clinic site. The work involves regular and recurring risks or discomforts associated with working in a clinical laboratory, e.g., working with infectious substances, contagious diseases, and chemical agents.
